Pre-Emergent Weed Control
When it comes to weed control, timing matters just as much as the product itself. One of the most effective ways to maintain a clean, healthy lawn all summer long is to stop weeds before they ever emerge.
That is exactly the purpose of a pre-emergent weed control application.
What is a pre-emergent
A pre-emergent is a type of herbicide that prevents weed seeds from germinating. Instead of targeting visible weeds, it works below the surface by forming a barrier in the soil. When weed seeds begin to sprout, they are stopped before breaking through the soil surface.
This approach is far more efficient and far less disruptive than trying to control mature weeds later in the season.
Why timing is critical
Most summer weeds germinate as soil temperatures rise in late winter and early spring. If pre-emergent is applied too late, many of those weeds have already established roots. If applied at the correct time, weed pressure can be reduced dramatically for months.
This is why the first round of our lawn program is pre-emergent control.
Not all pre-emergents are created equal
Indaziflam (Spectical) is a next-generation pre-emergent that provides longer-lasting and more consistent control than traditional products. It remains active in the soil for an extended period, covering the entire summer germination window rather than fading early.
This extended control is a major reason we are able to reduce herbicide use across the rest of the season. Fewer weeds germinating means fewer post-emergent spot sprays later. That aligns perfectly with our goal of achieving excellent results while minimizing chemical inputs.
Key Weeds Prevented
• Crabgrass
• Goosegrass
• Spurge
• Annual bluegrass
• Other common warm-season annual weeds like dandelions, etc.
By preventing these weeds early, the turf is able to grow thicker and stronger, naturally crowding out future invaders.
How a proper pre-emergent application reduces herbicide use long-term
Every weed prevented is one that never needs to be sprayed. Effective pre-emergent control allows us to rely primarily on targeted spot treatments rather than blanket herbicide applications, reducing chemical inputs by 10X or more (thousands of gallons per year).
This results in a safer lawn for kids and pets, healthier soil biology, and more consistent results year after year.
Post-Treatment Recommendations
• Keep people and pets off the lawn until dry, usually about one hour
• Allow rainfall or irrigation to activate the product within a few days
• Avoid disturbing the soil immediately after application
• Continue normal mowing once the re-entry period has passed
These simple steps ensure the product performs exactly as intended.
The big picture
Pre-emergent weed control is not about quick fixes. It is about building a system where weeds never gain a foothold in the first place.
When combined with proper fertility, soil health, and consistent monitoring, this early application sets the tone for the entire growing season.
It is one of the biggest reasons our clients see thicker turf, fewer weeds, and better results with fewer chemicals.
