Mealybug Control Round 1
If you are receiving this service, it means our team has identified Tuttle mealybug activity or enough evidence to recommend a more aggressive response.
This is a rare and difficult lawn pest that primarily affects zoysia grass. Because mealybugs are unusually resilient and hard to control with simple spot treatments alone, we developed a two-treatment Mealybug Control Program designed to give your lawn the best chance possible.
What Round 1 Is Designed to Do
Round 1 is the first of two treatments in the program.
This application is made between April and June and is designed to get targeted systemic insecticides into the plant early, before the next generation of mealybugs becomes more active and damaging.
Round 2 is applied 14 - 20 days after the first application.
Product Details
This treatment uses targeted systemic insecticides selected specifically for this notoriously difficult-to-control pest.
How it works:
The product is absorbed into the grass plant
Feeding insects are exposed while they feed
Early timing improves the odds of slowing population growth before peak damage shows up later in the season
Is This Program Organic or Safe?
This is not an organic program.
Unfortunately, there are no truly viable organic options for controlling Tuttle mealybugs at the level needed to protect an infested lawn. These products were selected because they offer the best balance of safety and effectiveness available, but they are still chemical insecticides, and they are far from ideal.
This program can have negative effects on soil biology, which is why we encourage extra caution after each application. The organic inputs used in our fertility programs help support the re-establishment of healthier soil ecology over time.
Does The Turf Pest Prevention Treatment Control Mealybugs?
There is some trial data and evidence that suggest the active ingredient in our Turf Pest Prevention treatment provides some level of Tuttle Mealybug control.
However, in most studies, the Turf Pest Prevention product has shown “poor to moderate” control of insects with sucking mouthparts, such as mealybugs.
Unfortunately, Turf Pest Prevention is not a reliable means of control, but it can offer some assistance.
Pre & Post-Treatment Instructions
Allow at least 1 hour before re-entry.
We will leave a clearly visible service sign with the date and time of application, so you and your maintenance crew can easily follow the recommended re-entry window. This helps protect anyone working in the landscape and ensures the treatment is not disrupted before it has time to fully take effect.
There is NO need to water this treatment in.
